What timing! I happen to search Itch for exploration games and find this gem one day after release! I've already started playing and I love the art and design work you put into it. Open world exploration with custom character design? Just the kind of RPG I like! Thanks so very much for this game!
I love being able to make my own character (extra points if I get to be a dragon or something) and come up with my own builds in an RPG. I tried making the game largely to my own preferences in that regard. I hope you enjoy it!
So far I am! I do think I might have found a bug, however-- when the game first started, I was having to manually center the little action slider when it was moving in combat (like in Undertale), but after a little while, it vanished and suddenly all my attacks are automatic? I saw there was an option to turn this on and off in the game (a character at an inn explained manual versus automatic), but I never changed it to automatic in the options and when I look it's showing that as still turned off. Is this a bug or does it swap to automatic when you've filled up your SP bar?
The slider fills your SP up. When at 100%, the slider will stop appearing during attacks. If you use a special, your SP will go back down to 0% and the slider should show once again if SP gain is set to manual. If it's set to automatic then the slider will never appear and every attack will gain 10% SP until it reaches 100% again.
I thought it might be something like that! I really like the vibe of the game so far, very friendly and encourages exploration.
Spent a little more time with this. I’m impressed with the wide-open world with so many locations and secrets. I didn’t take the best of notes at first, and have gotten kind of stuck.
Can you tell me where the location is that wants ‘the sound of darkness’? I can’t remember where it is and feel like it might unlock things, now that I know it.
The artist is a useful resource to progress, but now all the characters are in an area I can’t seem to reach.
What abilities do you have currently? In general the best generic advice I can give is to look at the map and do some wandering but maybe I can try and help a bit. Oh also taking some notes can be nice.
I don't mind spilling the beans if you're stuck.
The cave that wants the "sound of darkness" is in Heather's Cove. Which is the village that has the Sharkade. It's close to the lower centre of the map above a small body of water.
In order to progress further you might need to defeat the 2nd boss. If looking at Heather's Cove on the map, the cave that's to the bottom right of it is where they are. You have to enter that cave from the south entrance.
Good luck!
I had a great time playing the game. I have gone through and beaten it successfully getting close to what I think is the worst ending possible. I look forward to completing all the quests and hopefully getting a better one, the poor winged one and all their friends deserve it. There are a lot of quality of life things that are a bit frustrating about the game that stylistically make it feel more like a gameboy game which I respected. I love it and there are a lot of things that I wish I could comment on but I don't want to include any spoilers.
Thank you for playing it through to the end! I hope you manage to get a happier ending next time!
I have now fully beaten the game and gotten the final ending. Thanks to all that worked on it. It is one of my favorite games I have played.
Thank you so much! This was actually a solo development project by me. I made all of the music, art, writing, scripts and so on. Although I wouldn't have got far without the people who made the tools I used, such as GBStudio itself!
That was fast, you must be really good!
oh! It's fresh out the oven!
I'll keep an eye on it. Big fan of adventure rpgs and strategy games.
Baked and ready to go!
This game is so long with so much going on that I'm quite daunted by having to write review for it.
However I do like it and I gave it 5 stars. I think I have played for about 7 hours. It does seem to get hard later, but I won't say where I am. Lots of effort into making a substantial world to explore. I like that you can customize your character's stats and experiment with different builds.
The graphics are great for the game boy, many areas look the same but of course memory is limited.
The encounter rate is absurdly high by modern standards but that is par for the course in this kind of game too. It might have been nicer to just have the encounter rate be a bit lower instead of giving every area with random encounters an unlockable route around it.
The story seems to pull a lot of inspiration from Undertale, but of course there was a reason why that game's story was good and it pulled a lot of inspiration from other games in the first place.
I really like the sound effects and music, but there aren't a lot of different themes and they are pretty short, again, memory limitations I guess.
Thanks for the review.
I have been a little bit concerned about the encounter rate. I've tweaked it many times to try and make it feel right. There is a way to permanently lower the encounter rate but it's something of a secret. I guess I could work on making that secret a little more known within the game.
I'll admit that the music is less so due to memory limitations and just more so just me getting a little overwhelmed with composing it all on top of everything else. But I agree. There could be more to it.
I found it, but at the time I needed the money. Now I'm so rich I have no need to fight regular enemies except for experience.
Hey, I've been enjoying this game so far!
Can you please provide a walkthrough for those moments players feel like they are just running around in circles without making progress? I'm still trying to figure out how to push boulders.
Thank you for playing!
You have to defeat the first boss and interact with the book behind him in order to gain the ability to push boulders. The boss is located in the southern cave in Bo Village. If you open your map, Bo Village is the 2nd closest village to the bottom left corner. You can select villages on the map to check their names. I hope this helps!
I've been liking the game, but the stats seem a little deceptive. I've been playing alongside my boyfriend, and I leveled agility, tenacity, and resourcefulness. He leveled up strength, agility ,and intelligence. He has been having a MUCH easier time of the game, steamrolling through encounters significantly faster, his character is overpowered as hell, he beat the first boss still naked using a dagger he found in a cave with no effort, without using any healing items, while I took several attempts to beat them with a full armor set and the same dagger. Tenacity just seems like it doesn't actually do anything, because teh boss was hitting me for the same amount of damage despite wearing armor + having tenacity leveled. He also had more gold then me because of how quickly he cleared encounters, so the extra gold from tenacity doesn't even seem to matter, if it even did give extra gold (it didn't feel like it did.)
It just seems like levelling anything that isn't a damage stat is a pointless waste of time that makes your character weaker.
Thank you for the critique.
I'm actually a little bit curious about this. He shouldn't really be getting much of an advantage in terms of damage by having increased every damage stat. If he was using a dagger, only his agility stat would be calculated for the damage while strength and intelligence would only be for stun and heal chance per hit. Someone with the same agility but no strength or intelligence should be hitting for the same amount if holding the same dagger. Was he perhaps a higher overall level? Could it also be possible that you selected Hard Mode while he did not? You can check if you're on Hard Mode by pressing next in the status menu.
Naw, I checked that and it wasn't the case. Also I was wrong and it wasn't str/agi/int he did, it was agi/int/res, and he just ignored strength and tenacity entirely. And from my further testing it turns out that strength and tenacity are just bad stats that make you weaker if you try to level them. Tenacity makes no noticeable difference, tested with 20 tenacity versus 0, enemies did the same damage and I couldn't even tell they were dropping more gold. Strength weapons have such low accuracy rating that even a weapon with half the damage has higher "Damage per turn" just because they have 100% accuracy, and the chance to stun is so negligible you can't depend on it. So, thats why I was struggling because I wasted a lot of points investing in two useless stats. I changed my build to his and proceeded to start rapidly steamrolling the game too. Even started a new playthrough on hard mode and it also trivializes hardmode, the game just becomes a lot easier if you avoid the bad stats.
The strength stuns are pretty good though, even if they're not statistically optimal or anything, they are probably the most powerful of those random stat effects. It's very satisfying to get them.
The random crits and healing are also just as impactful and the stats are actually useful on top of the proc effects. Strength ONLY gives the random stun.
Strength probably is the least useful, but it's cool. Tenacity doesn't seem to do a whole lot, it doesn't seem like it makes enemies miss more or do less damage as advertised. But even if you completely ignore those two the game does not stay easy forever.
I'm glad you found a build that works for you.
Was you wearing armour while testing tenacity? Tenacity increases the defence provided by armour. If you was wearing nothing then tenacity isn't doing much. It's effects are more noticeable alongside armour with high defence. In retrospective I probably should have advertised that better. I will admit that the gold increase provided by tenacity is incredibly low and is more of a leftover effect from much earlier in development which I decided to keep in just to spice the stat up a little more.
Strength weapons do have lower accuracy. I tried to balance them out by giving them higher damage but I didn't want to go overboard because of the wind charm (which guarantee’s a hit) possibly making them too strong. There's always room for more balance tweaks though.
Played this for a couple of hours, really enjoying it so far!
Thank you! I'm glad you've liked what you've seen so far!
Really nice. Decided to give a try, ended up already learning to push boulders…
Nice! That should open up much more of the map for you!
Been following the development, and so far the full release is clean as could be. Excited to play through the whole thing!
I'm really happy to hear that! Thank you for the longtime support!
Heya, I only got a chance to play for about 30 minutes so far but I am having a blast! I cannot wait to play more!
Thank you for playing! Your winged one will be waiting for whenever you're ready to play again!
